The Power of Being Brave
My name is Jane Ryall or JrVox and I am a singer, vocal coach and published songwriter. I run kids' singing and songwriting birthday parties and workshops for 7- 12 year olds in Sevenoaks and the surrounding areas. Parties are a small set of 6-8 children. I also run a Kodaly inspired after school singing club that teaches musicianship skills through singing at Chiddingstone school. I get so much inspiration from working with these children!
Helping kids build self-esteem and confidence is essential for their growth. One great way to do this is by encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones. Activities like singing, making music, and connecting with others can be incredibly impactful.
As Lady Gaga said, “You have to be brave and fearless and live your life to the fullest.” lyrics can inspire kids to embrace challenges and express themselves boldly!
#### Why Bravery Matters
Bravery doesn’t have to mean tackling big challenges. Sometimes, it’s about taking small steps. When kids try out for a school play or join a new music group, they not only face their fears but also discover new strengths. Each experience helps them realize what they’re capable of.
I often receive calls from worried parents before my kids' singing parties saying their child might be too nervous to attend. Yet, every time, those kids come and leave with newfound confidence and joy.
#### The Magic of Music and Singing
Getting involved in music and singing can really boost a child’s confidence. When they sing in a choir or play in a band, they get to express themselves and bond with peers. This connection fosters a sense of belonging, making them feel valued and accepted.
1. Self-Expression:
Music is a powerful way for kids to convey their feelings, helping them better understand and communicate their emotions.
2. Performance:
Whether in front of a few friends or a larger audience, performing can be nerve-wracking, but it teaches them to embrace vulnerability and grow from the experience.
#### Fun Ideas to Inspire Bravery
One fun way to encourage bravery and creativity in kids is by exposing them to the magic of live performances. Taking them to see a musical can not only be inspiring but also a great way to experience storytelling through song.
One fantastic show for kids is “Six”,showing at London's Vaudeville theatre, a modern pop musical about the wives of Henry VIII. Since we’re in Sevenoaks, near Hever Castle, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, this show has a local historical connection, too! Watching performers on stage sing and act out bold, fearless characters can leave kids feeling empowered to express themselves more freely.(One of the girls at my last singing workshop introduced me to this!)
#### Uplifting Songs for Confidence
Songs with positive messages can inspire kids to be brave and confident. Here are a few great examples:
- “Brave” by Sara Bareilles:
This empowering anthem encourages kids to speak up and be their true selves.
- “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten:
A powerful reminder that they can overcome challenges and make a difference.
-"Almost there" Sung by Tiana in Princess and the Frog, this song is about working hard and staying determind despite obstacles.
- “Try” by Colbie Caillat:
A gentle reminder that it’s okay to be imperfect and that effort matters more than perfection.
- “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana:
We did this at my last Sevenoaks kids' birthday party! This song is about courage, following your heart, and stepping into the unknown.
- “This is Me” by Keala Settle (written by UK singer/songwriter Benj Pasek):
A powerful anthem about embracing who you are and being proud of it. We use a vocal line from this in our warm up at my singing club.
#### Social Engagement
Encouraging kids to engage with others can significantly enhance their confidence. Activities like team sports, drama clubs, or community events offer chances to meet new friends and develop social skills.
1. Teamwork: Working together on a project or sport teaches children the value of collaboration and shared success. Collaboration is a big part of our songwriting parties as we start with a seed idea and water it with questions, growing a tree of ideas. Deciding on the direction of the song is a wonderful process.
2. Safe Spaces: Being part of a group where everyone has similar fears creates a supportive environment, making it easier for kids to take risks.
#### The Importance of Trying New Things
As parents or educators, we play a key role in nurturing bravery. Here are some ideas to help:
- Lead by Example:
Show kids how you tackle challenges in your own life. They’ll learn that bravery comes in many forms.
- Celebrate Efforts:
Praise them for trying, regardless of the outcome. This reinforces the idea that effort is what really matters.
- Provide Opportunities:
Encourage exploration by offering a variety of activities, like music lessons or local clubs.
